We are social beings. Without positive social contact we become withdrawn and removed from our community. It is important to be involved with activities that take you outside of yourself and expose you to other ideas and people.
As you become involved in your community you may find that the problems/challenges you face are not so daunting. Others face difficulties in their lives that make yours seem minor in comparison. There is also the added benefit of making new friends, networking and feeling good about helping others.
The Social and Relationship areas of your life are obviously closely related. The difference is that relationships deals with a deep and intimate one on one relationship. The social section deals with your involvement with others in your community. A one on one intimate relationship can be all consuming especially in the early stages. It is possible for a person to have a strong relationship with a marriage partner, but lack social contacts.
However a person who is lacking an intimate relationship and at the same time has limited social contacts is definitely out of balance. Having a good social life, having friends and acquaintances, a hobby or activity that gets you "out of yourself" is a great way to meet that special someone. When a person is socially involved and has a supportive circle of friends he/she is more likely to be happy and successful.
There are of course hundreds of ways to connect with others. Here are a few Action Tips:
1. Sign up for an evening class at a local college. Pick something you are interested in maybe an art or dance class.
2. Volunteer: There are all kinds of organizations looking
for volunteers.
3. Join a health club. (See health tips)
4. Learn a new sport. Tennis, golf, sailing, etc.
5. Practice speaking to people while waiting in line. At the grocery store, Starbucks, Deli, etc.
6. Join a political movement.
7. Get a dog and take it for a walk in the park.
8. Get to know your neighbors.
You will notice I don't mention online chat rooms, blogging or online dating services. The goal is to unhook you from electronic devices and interact with real people - in real time.
"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrived and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born." Anais Nin
