There is no denying that todays world is much busier than any that has come before it. People who are not busy getting their children from activity to activity put in a lot of extra time at work. We even tend to take our recreation much more seriously than before; with the average North American visiting a gym three times a week or more. With everything that is going on in the lives of individuals, there just doesnt seem to be a lot of time to go out and do the things that need to be done, such as shopping for items such as groceries, gifts, and even clothes!
A new type of employee has arisen out of the need for people to cut down on their shopping time, known as the personal shopper. Although the formal title was first applied to people hired by high end retailers in the clothing area (these employees would recommend entire outfits for a season to a special customer) personal shoppers have existed informally for quite a while, something we will get to in a minute.
A personal shopper is a person hired by either an individual or a group to go out and get some of the items necessary for day to day life, when life is just to hectic to get it done themselves. As mentioned above, the main use of a personal shopper is in shopping for outfits to fill out a wardrobe, but personal shoppers may also include those who purchase other peoples groceries, gifts for families, and so on.
The reason why it is likely that personal shoppers will increase in numbers in the next few years are varied. First, of course, there is the fact that peoples lives are not going to get any less full, and there will never be more hours in a day. In order to stay ahead or even keep abreast, families and individuals will have to rely on an outside network to get every day tasks done, and that includes the shopping. In addition, as the population continues to age, the demand for personal shoppers in the grocery area will increase. Personal shoppers have always been a popular choice for those who find grocery shopping a physically demanding task, and as the Baby Boomer generation begins to reach its golden years, more people will find the use of a personal shopper both desirable and necessary for their day-to-day life.
